Yukata - to be continued /

As my husband went out for photo shooting for a whole day, I am now trying to finish my yukata sewing homework.
I'm working on the longest part of the body of yukata; senui or the back.  I need to sew more than 1.5 meters twice...
My teacher's instructions are very detailed and practical.  When sewing the back for the second time, I was told to make it as close as possible to the end of the cloth.  This way, it can prevent the combined two sheets of cloth coming apart while wearing it.

Kikuya sweets /

Not related to kimono, but I just wanted to share the beauty of things Japanese...
From Nara, my husband's hometown, Mother-in-law sent us Japanese sweets of Kikuya.  Kikuya is famous for its authentic Japanese sweets mainly used for tea ceremonies.
All the sweets tasted so nice, but also the packages are so pretty.  Some patterns looked like those of kimonos.

By the way, it's still a long way to complete my hand-made yukata.  It's still a long strip of textile.

Dinner with kimono friend /

Friday dinner with a kimono friend at Singaporean cuisine restaurant in Yurakucho.  She regularly arranges kimono gatherings among a few kimono friends.  Thanks to her, I could get used to wearing kimono, as well as going out in kimono.
She was going to fly to Canada, where she would attend her cousin's wedding.  She and her mother would attend wearing plain, dark yellow formal kimono (tsukesage).  Although tsukesage was the most suitable kimono for formal occasions like weddings, the truth was that she wanted to bring another kimono.  However, it was not tailored to be a formal one, and was very gorgeous in appearance with big orchid patterns on black background.  I still strongly encouraged her to bring her favorite one to Canada.
It turned out that her mother already put the formal plain one into her suitcase, and she had no choice to wear it instead of the prettier orchid kimono...

Speaking of tsukesage, the sleeve length of my tsukesage is a little longer (56cm) than today's standard (49cm).  Longer sleeved kimonos are supposed to be worn by younger, single women.  Married women like me are supposed to shorten the sleeves.
I searched on the internet, but found many different views.  Some say married women should stick to the standard short sleeves, especially when formal settings.  On the other hand, others said that there used to be times when formal kimonos tend to have longer sleeves, regardless of the wearers' marrige status, as longer sleeves looked more dressy and suitable to formal occasions.  Well, since there is not a consolidated view on long sleeves, then I would keep the pretty long sleeves of my tsukesage.

Kasoyo 花想容

Visited Kasoyo, my favorite kimono shop, for the first time in four months.  They were hosting "100 Yukata Selections", where I wanted to get a new tailor-made yukata for this summer.
Fortunately both my husband and myself had a dramatic encounter with yukata rolls!  What will they look like?  Stay still until next month, when they will be ready to wear.
