My dream summer kimono / あこがれの夏きもの

Taking more time to sewing yukata than my expectation...  It's not about finishing one sewing, but about learning how to sew a kimono in a correct way.  My teacher often corrects my homework, and I need to work on the same part again.  But, I believe, in a long run, this will bear a good fruit.  Instead of completing a crukid kimono, it would be more worthwhile to make a good-shaped one, even if it takes a little bit more time. 

思ったよりゆかた作りが時間を食っている。とりあえず一着作り終える、というのではなく、正しく縫うことを学んでいる。先生はよく宿題を直してくれて、私はもう一度その部分をやらないといけない。でも、たぶん、時間がかかってもこの方がいい結果を生むと思う。ゆがんだ形のきものを早く作り上げるより、時間が多少余計にかかっても、ちゃんとした形のものを縫い上げられる方が良いはず。

I realized that I am almost using up my yarn for my yukata. Yes, I sewed a lot already!

気づくと糸巻から糸がもうすぐなくなりかけていた。  たくさん縫ったものだ。

Kimono sewing wine gathering at Roppongi / 和裁塾、六本木でワインの会

I was free daytime today, and have been working on kimono sewing homework... 
Working on each side of the body, one of the most difficult and complicated part of the whole process. 
One side was done by our teacher at the last class.  I tried to do the same way for the other side. 
Not sure if I'm on the right track...

昼間は用事がなかったので和裁の宿題にとりかかる。身頃の脇を縫う。最も難しく複雑なところの一つだ。片方は前回のクラスで先生がして下さったので、もう片方も同じようにして自分で縫う。これで果たして正しくできているのか・・・ 

From the evening, I had a wine gathering among our teacher and us students of kimono sewing  class.  When arriving at French Kitchen in Roppongi, I found all the other members were in kimono or yukata.  Since it was going to rain, I wore a dress I bought in Taiwan, instead of wearing my new yukata.  I hope it balanced well with beautiful kimonos around me. 

We chatted about kimono all the time throughout the dinner.  It was such a happy evening. 

夜からは和裁塾の先生生徒さんたちとワインの会。着くと私以外みんな着物を着ていた。雨が降りそうだったので私は台湾で買った現代風チャイナドレスを着用。着物とよくバランスが取れていたら良いのだが。

最初から最後まで四六時中着物の話で盛り上がる。楽しい宵になった。

Summer kimono outing - Nezu to Nippori / きものでお出かけ＠根津～日暮里

Finally the day has come for summer kimono outing.  We are visiting Nezu and walk all the way to Nippori, where old Tokyo houses and sidewalks still remain with good air. 
It's a lot easier to wear tailor-made kimono.  I must save up to have my kimono more suitable to my own size. 

いよいよきものでおでかけの週末。今回は根津から日暮里へ。東京の古き良き家々や路地裏が味のある雰囲気で残っている場所だ。
自分サイズの着物はずっと着やすいことを実感。お金を貯めて、なんとか自分サイズの着物を増やしていこう。

Special mesures to survive summer heat / 暑さ特別対策

I bought obi-makura & obi-ita made of hechima (a kind of cucumber).  Both of them have been known as usuful tool to make summer kimono life more comfortable, as they release more heat and humidity inside the clothes.  Let's see if they work well for this weekend's kimono outing. 

銀座松屋に入っている「壱の蔵」さんで、へちまの帯枕と帯板を購入。かねてから暑い中でも蒸れず快適と定評があり、友だちが購入したとの連絡も受けて買ってみた。今週末のきものでお出かけにも功を奏するか、楽しみだ。

Tailor made yukata finally arrived! / 誂えたゆかた、ようやく到着

Received a call from Kasoyo, saying that yukata of me & husband are finally received.  We went to the shop to get it on Sunday.  Yes, it was a right choice!
I also asked Nakano-san, shop owner of Kasoyo, to suggest coordinate of this yukata with other items such as obi, obi-jime & obi-age.  All shop staff gathered and there was a heated discussion on which obi was a best match with this yukata.  Most ladies agreed on a white obi with blue pattern, but I liked Nakano-san's suggestion of a pink obi with darker pink check pattern.  Coincidentally, Ichiwaki san, one of the most notable zori / geta shop in Kyoto, and Nishimura san, the biggest Hakata obi maker, were there for one-week fair, and they also helped my coordinate.  Buying a new summer obi was out of my initial plan, but I was knocked out by the beautiful combination of obi & this yukata, and couldn't help buying it also...  I have no phote of the obi yet, but am looking forward to it to be prepared next week. 


花想容さんから、誂えたゆかたがようやく到着した旨、お電話をいただく。さっそく日曜日に伺った。やっぱり、これにしてよかった。
持っていない夏物の帯締め・帯揚げをコーディネートしてもらう。店員さん総出で、あれでもないこれでもない、と店内を２分しながら議論が続く。ちょうど京都の一脇さんフェアをやっていたのと、博多織織元の西村織物さんがおられて、畏れ多くも脇さんご本人と西村の若店主にもお手伝いいただくこととなった。。。
ついでに帯まで新調してしまった・・・。紗の博多織。これまたちょうど博多織元の西村さんが来られていたので、ご相談した。写真にはないが、仕立て上がりが楽しみだ。



At the same time, my husband's yukata arrived.  Ichiwaki-san graciously taught him how to better tie obi.  He also decided to buy this new obi from Nishimura orimono.

夫殿の浴衣も到着。一脇さんが帯の巻き方をご教示下さった。夫殿も西村織物の帯を新調する羽目に。

After a lecture by professionals, even the back style became a lot better. 

やっぱりプロに教わると、シルエットがぜんぜんきれい。

Yukata - to be continued / ゆかた 続き

As my husband went out for photo shooting for a whole day, I am now trying to finish my yukata sewing homework. 
I'm working on the longest part of the body of yukata; senui or the back.  I need to sew more than 1.5 meters twice... 
My teacher's instructions are very detailed and practical.  When sewing the back for the second time, I was told to make it as close as possible to the end of the cloth.  This way, it can prevent the combined two sheets of cloth coming apart while wearing it. 

主人が写真撮影会に一日中出かけたので、ゆかたの宿題に取り組む。今日は背縫い。着物でおそらくもっとも長い縫い目の一つ。１．５メートル強を２度も縫わなくてはいけない。。。とにかく長い。
しかし先生は細かく注意して縫い方を教えて下さった。２度目の縫い目は、布の耳ぎりぎりを縫う。そうすることで、着ているうちに縫い目が開いてくることが防げる。

Kikuya sweets / 菊屋のお茶菓子

Not related to kimono, but I just wanted to share the beauty of things Japanese...
From Nara, my husband's hometown, Mother-in-law sent us Japanese sweets of Kikuya.  Kikuya is famous for its authentic Japanese sweets mainly used for tea ceremonies. 
All the sweets tasted so nice, but also the packages are so pretty.  Some patterns looked like those of kimonos. 


着物に関係はないが、日本のものの美しさを少しご紹介。
奈良の義母から菊屋のお茶菓子が届いた。味もさることながら、パッケージもきれい。こんな柄の小紋、着てみたい、とか妄想してしまう。

By the way, it's still a long way to complete my hand-made yukata.  It's still a long strip of textile. 
しかし、ゆかたはまだまだ完成を見ない…
